The Lost Art of Saying “I don’t know”

Written By: Roberta M. Fisher, Gadd Business Consultants, LLC

We all have no problem saying “I don’t know” to family or friends but would never utter these words to staff, co-workers or customers in a business situation.

Business owners struggle with this comment because they think and/or feel that would make them look unprofessional or uninformed about their business.  This is not the case at all, no one can know all about every issue when it comes to running a business.  Many situations are handled by trial and error.

Three reasons to be honest with yourself and your business…

  1. Admitting to yourself you need outside assistance is not a cause for failure. It allows you to overcome the obstacle and have growth.

  1. It allows you to learn business lessons and grow. Not “appearing” to know it all (which no one likes) builds your staff and customers respect and helps to avoid embarrassing moments..

  1. Minimize sleepless nights due to the pressure to have all the answers instantly.

You can acquire a clearer view of the situation by taking your time before making costly and senseless decisions.

Saying the above three words is not a sign of failure, missing sense of direction or lack of leadership, it only makes you human.  This indicates you have the potential of being a true leader.  Contact us today, if you “don’t know”, we can assist and help you find the answer!  Gadd Business Consultants, 313-943-3150, or info@gaddbiz.com.
